The visual identity for Moscow 870 was based on archival photographs. The event’s concept was: “Moscow – a city where world history is made.” History is created by people, so conceptually, we needed to use portraits of many historical figures—scientists, writers, musicians, and inventors. We also required photographs of key events and cultural phenomena.
Our goal was to show something new, something people hadn’t already seen online. That’s why digital archives like TASS and RIA weren’t suitable. My task in this project was not just to find little-known photographs from the Soviet era but to discover entirely new sources of images.
As a result, I visited archives, museum reading rooms, and reviewed materials that had never been digitized before. It was a fascinating experience—very different from the daily routine of a photo editor.
